About the Artwork:
From 1980 to 1985, Chicago worked on the Birth Project. Judy Chicago collaborated with more than 150 needleworkers during the Birth Project to create dozens of images combining painting and needlework that celebrate various aspects of the birth process; from the painful to the mythical. Sometimes witty and always original, this series celebrates the birth-giving capacity of women along with their creative spirit. Birth Project works were toured by Through the Flower to over 100 venues, then gifted by the organization to various institutions around the country. The Birth Project is included in many prominent permanent collections. This poster of "The Crowning" is a reproduction of the image from a quilt in this series of work.
All proceeds from the sale of these posters will directly support Za'Kiyah house in Braddock, PA that supports people transitioning out of prison or other extreme life crises. Heliotrope has donated a property in Braddock, PA across from the old steel mill and adjacent to the Braddock Church to become Za’Kiyah’s new home for women that is slated to open in December 2021. The next step is to begin renovations for the house this Spring!
