This is a black and white photo of a couple sharing a dance with the dramatic southwestern landscape of Monument Valley in the background as the bride's mom looks on holding a bouquet of flowers seated in a lawn chair. Thomas's depiction of a postnuptial dance in Monument Valley, on the Navajo Nation, captures the intimacy of human connection and tradition, while also illuminating the the profound bond between people and the natural world. Set against the sacred backdrop of Monument Valley, the land itself emerges as a significant participant, with each contour and crest infused with cultural significance. In this context the dance transcends mere celebration to become a profound act of communion with the land, emphasizing a universal connection that extends beyond individual identities and tribal affiliations.

About the Artist:
Chip Thomas, aka Jetsonorama, is a photographer, public artist and physician who worked in a small clinic on the Navajo Nation for 36 years.  There, he coordinated the Painted Desert Project. He describes it as a community building dialog which manifested as a constellation of murals painted by artists from the Navajo Nation as well as from around the world. Thomas’ own public artwork consists of enlarged black and white photographs pasted on to structures along the roadside primarily on the Navajo Nation.  His motivation is to reflect back to the community the love they’ve shared with him over the years.

Thomas was a 2018 Kindle Project gift recipient and in 2020 he was one of a handful of artists chosen by the UN to recognize the 75th anniversary of the UN’s founding.  Selected artists were asked to generate work that contributes to the envisioning and shaping of a more resilient and sustainable future.
